Materials With Meaning

A couple months back I met with Joy from Raha Roho about creating some pieces for our home that would become staples for us, travel with us, and add comfort to new spaces if life had us transitioning into a new rental property (it’s been 3 in 3 years, just in case you’re counting;). At the time I had no idea that a couple months later we would be moving on to a new home in Port Moody that we would fall in love with…More on that later!

I sent her vision boards, colours and styles I felt would would transition well with new homes, and the pieces needed to be able to hold their own against 3 little humans. Over the past few years, I’ve started to value investing in companies that are not just producing product but also investing in our world. I fell in love with Raha Roho’s story long before I actually started the conversation about creating a piece for our home. Although Joy puts it so much more beautifully on her site, which you can read here. I loved that Joy’s heart for people and elevating woman transitioned into her work. She found a way to marry her love with textiles, colours, design, and people into a product that financially supports the woman making the product. This initiates and creates teamwork, community, and teaches and trains woman how to become weavers which directly effects their lives and affairs.

Our home is a constant gathering of different types of people from many different backgrounds with stories to tell. It’s so important to me that people feel safe in our home, loved, and valued. For me it means creating spaces that are warm, filled with different textures, and easily transitions into more seating that says “there is always room for more.”

The rugs are warm, the coffee table easily transitions into more seating, and the couch says “stay a while.”

There is something very special about investing in a pieces for your home that have stories to tell and not just a price tag. Although all the pieces in our home cannot tell the same story behind their brand, we do mindfully pair pieces like Raha Roho with thrifted items and also favourites from brands like Ikea, Target and Home Sense.

Raha Roho also offers custom pieces which I love because it allows you to put your own touch on the design and create something very unique to you. Raha Roho also creates the the most beautiful children’s rugs which will be in our next home post so stay tuned for that!
